Scarlett thought she left her life in Tidings behind. Chicago wasn’t how she remembered it and her attempts at finding a new happiness is hampered by the knowledge that Slate will always love her — and never forgive her. Her heart is divided, but her mind is whole when she made the choice to put the Dagr line ahead of her own happiness. She didn’t grasp that her actions meant she took Slate’s happiness with her.

Slate is back but hasn’t woken from his coma. There’s no telling if he will wake or what his mental state will be if he does. The end of their grief and torment is close at hand, and Scarlett feels the turn in the tides coming as long as she continues to go along with Ash’s increasing demands.
While Quick Silver and Indigo have settled into their public relationship, concern grows as Scarlett’s pregnancy shows and her time is spent with the ones she used to loathe, and more time than ever on her own.
With enemies so close, it’s impossible to see the danger coming.
Faced with the end of their world as they know it, Scarlett senses that their lone chance of survival is uniting the tribes and gaining back the islands. Indigo remains in the clutches of the Stygians after failed rescue attempts, and Thrimilci is the sole island recovered after a grisly battle.
Only fulfilling the prophecy will save them, but in doing so Slate will die — a choice Scarlett will have to make.
